The Confederation employs 507 tax lawyers. The Department of Finance employs all 507 people in this series of jobs. This series covers a variety of positions involving legal work, usually complementing the work of lawyers, administrative judges, appellate bodies of administrative authorities or other duly appointed managers of legal work in areas such as litigation; the preparation of legal opinions; or the procedures of appeal or review committees, the actions of regulatory committees or commissions and similar judicial functions on the basis of hearings held under the Administrative Procedure Act or another statutory appellate authority. This series includes positions whose duties are to administer, supervise or perform quasi-legal work associated with the processing, adjudication and consultation of applications and claims for rights, privileges, benefits or other benefits approved under the various public lands, mining leases and mining acts. The work requires knowledge of applicable public laws and the policies and procedures of the authorities regarding the application of these laws, but does not require comprehensive professional legal training. This series includes positions whose functions are to manage, supervise or perform quasi-legal work related to the preparation, review, adjustment, review or approval of the settlement of claims of veterans, their dependants and beneficiaries relating to disability compensation, disability pensions, death annuity, death penalty, national service life insurance and U.S. government life insurance, as well as others from the Veterans Affairs Administration. Some work in other large agencies. There is little doubt that law degree holders have a head start in entering this profession when it comes to learning how to decide claims against those who do not have such training. For example, people with legal training are generally familiar with topics such as family relationships, ancestry and division of property, and citizenship requirements. People without legal training need to acquire this knowledge in the workplace. The ability to be analytical and to apply judgment and discretion to the extent required in this series is found in both those without legal training and those with training. Therefore, while desirable, a law school degree is not considered a minimum qualification requirement for this series. Please read the full call and instructions before starting an application.
